Kelly Slater gana el Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
Otra vez Kelly ha vuelto a demostrar que nada le afecta. Los rumores sobre su retirada, el llegar casi a los cuarenta años, o incluso problemas estomacales no han impedido que haya ganado otra vez el Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
Ha vencido a Taj Burrow, anterior ganador del campeonato, en una final con unas condiciones penosas, en un revoltijo de olas bacheadas imposibles de leer. No pasará a la historia esta edición del Quiksilver Pro por sus olas, eso está claro.
También está claro que tanto el australiano como el norteamericano han estado hoy en un estado de forma superior al resto. Vencieron sus mangas de cuartos fácilmente ante Brett Simpson, Dusty Payne, respectivamente. En esa misma ronda Tiago Pires y Jordy Smith vencían en el último segundo a Matt Wilkinson y al nuevo ídolo brasileño, Alejo Muniz. El portugués pasó justamente, en mi opinión. Más discutible fue el 7.70 que le dieron a Smith en el último segundo. ¿Merecía tanto?
Sea como fuere se llegó a las semifinales. Ni Taj, ni Kelly tuvieron piedad de sus rivales, fueron muy superiores.
Llegaron los dos surfistas más sólidos a la última ronda. Las condiciones en el mar seguían empeorando así que solo valía la táctica del melón: abrirlo para saber si está maduro.
De esta forma los dos finalistas se pusieron tibios a pillar una ola detrás de otra. No importaba demasiado las preferencias porque fueron pocos los momentos en los que coincidieron en el pico. Kelly tuvo más suerte y consiguió dos cincos que le daban ventaja. Taj no conseguía nada, ninguna nota destacable, parecía frustrado y, justo cuando parecía que no había nada que hacer, enlazó un puñado de maniobras en la ola más larga de la manga. Los jueces le dieron un 7.17, insuficiente para vencer. Tan solo un par de minutos después Slater ya era llevado a hombros hacia el podio.
Por favor Kelly, no te retires nunca.
