Mick Fanning gana el Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2012
En los últimos 4 años de competición en Bells Beach, la victoria se había repartido entre Joel Parkinson y Kelly Slater. Kelly (2008), Parko(2009), Kelly(2010), Parko (2011).
Le tocaba el turno a Kelly. Todo parecía apuntar a ello. Parko caía ante Mick Fanning en semifinales y le dejaba la opción al norteamericano de seguir con la racha.
Y lo cierto es que podía haber ganado cualquiera, debían haber ganado los dos, porque vaya final. Fanning se ponía por delante gracias a dos olas muy parecidas llenas de giros y estilo. Slater estaba muy atrás, parecía perdido, incluso se caía. A la desesperada, en mitad de la manga, pilló una ola, la aguantó y se tiró hacia el labio con todas sus fuerzas, saliendo despedido por el aire mientras giraba sobre si mismo hasta caer sobre la espuma y desaparecer. Y cuando ya no había esperanzas, la licra roja apareció de nuevo. Un 10, un 20, 100. Alucinante.
Slater estaba crecido, sabía que podía ganar. Se lanzó a por la siguiente ola. Con giros clásicos en modo radical se ponía delante en el marcador. Pero solo duró segundos, porque en la siguiente ola estaba Fanning. Le metió 4 giros, de los buenos, y no mantuvo el equilibrio en la última maniobra. Un 9.70. ¿Quizá demasiado? Puede.
Slater se esforzó durante el resto de la manga, mientras Fanning dejaba de mirar a las olas para marcar al norteamericano hasta el final de la manga.
Felicidad compartida. Fanning gana el Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach y Kelly se vuelve a poner líder del mundial a sus 40 años. Impresionante.
